Role in Freedom Movement


Before Independence

In 1921, in vijayawada (which is at a distance of 12km from Mangalagiri), All india congress committee meetings held. Mahathma Gandhi finalized the National flag created by Pingali Venkaiah.

On 23-1-1937, there was a meeting in Guntur. After the meeting at around 3-4PM, Mahathma Gandhi started for Guntur in open top car. He came through Mangalagiri. He did not talk anything in mangalagiri.

In 1935, Ex-president Sri Babu rajendra prasad visited all the places in andhra to observe the situations for the independence fight. In november, he visited mangalagiri.

Freedom Fighters Memorial

On 13-2-1948, this Sila Sasanam was established by mangalagiri people lead by Panchayathi president at that time, Sri Chintakrindi Kanakaiah. Till june 2004, it was there in front of Devasthanam. In August 2004, Pattana Vikasa Mandali moved that to Karumanchi Venkata Subbaiah Kalavedika

Sri Voore Koteswararao
He participated in Quit India, and was imprisoned for 6 months from 2-10-1942 at Alipuram camp prison. He has worked so much to develop communist party in Mangalagiri.

Sri Voore Subbarao
He was imprisoned for 6 months for doing Bharatha matha bhajan by Kurnool sub-magistrate. For not following 144th section, he was imprisoned for 4 months starting from 5-1-1922. He was a teacher, and helped to develop communist party in the beginning.

Sri Cheruvu Lakshmi Narasimham
He participated in Vuppu Satyagraham and was imprisoned on 24-5-1930 for one year. He was imprisoned in Rajahmundry, Koyambathur, and Alipuram. After Gandhi-Irwin agreement, he was released in 13-3-1931.

Sri Ramanadham Subbarao
He participated in Sasanollanghana Vudyamam, and was imprisoned on 1-2-1932 for 9 months. He had played major role in Weavers, and Padmasaliya Sangham.

Sri Venigalla NarasimhaSwamy
He born on 17-1-1911. He was arrested in 1930 for doing walk-out from the school. He was arrested second time for hosting indian flag on 26-1-1932.

Sri Nalam Venkataratnam
He participated in Vuppu Satyagraham and was arrested on 7-7-1930, and imprisoned for 6 months at alipuram camp prison.

Sri Janjanam Narasimham
He participated in Quit India, and imprisoned for one year at alipuram camp prison starting from 3-12-1942.

Sri Kalangi Venkataratnam
He born on 4-1-1907 to Chenchu Punnaiah. At the age of 23, he participated in Sasanollanghana Vudyamam, and was arrested on 5-7-1930, and imprisoned for 6 months. After that, he participated in the same revolution, and was arrested again on 12-4-1932 for 6 months, and imprisoned at Rajahmundry, and kadaluru. He was a journalist, and participated in congress party. He developed mangalagiri as a panchayat president.

Sri Nadamarthi Lakshmi Kantharao
He participated in Quit India, and was imprisoned for 6 months starting from 2-10-1942 at alipuram camp prison.

Sri Damarla Nagabhushanam
He born on 20-12-1919. When there was a warrant against him, he lived in seclude place for 7 months in 1942. He died on 18-12-2000.

Srimathi S.Subhadramma
She joined in congress party, and became Andhra Niyantha in that party. She was arrested on 2-4-1932 at penumaka for one year.

Sri Kavuru Ramakotaiah
He born in 1912 to Kondaiah. He participated in Sasanollangana Vudyamam, and was arrested on 27-1-1932. He was imprisoned at Rajahmundry for 6 months.

Sri Meka Kotireddy
He participated in Sasanollangana Vudyamam, and was imprisoned on 15-3-1932 for 2 years in Rajahmundry, and kannor. He became MLA for Mangalagiri in 1955 from congress party.
